La Zi Ji (spicy Tofu Delight)

Ingredients

  • 1 block of firm tofu, cubed
  • 2 tablespoons Sichuan peppercorns
  • 3-4 dried red chilies
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu to remove excess water, then cut it into cubes.
  2. Heat the cooking oil in a pan over medium heat and add the Sichuan peppercorns and dried red chilies. Cook until fragrant.
  3. Add the garlic, ginger, and green onions to the pan and sauté for a few minutes.
  4. Stir in the tofu cubes and cook until lightly browned.
  5. In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, cornstarch, and vegetable broth. Pour this mixture over the tofu and stir gently to coat.
  6. Cook for an additional 5-7 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and coat the tofu.
  7. Serve hot and garnish with additional green onions, if desired.
