La Zi Ji (spicy Tofu Delight)
La Zi Ji, also known as Spicy Tofu Delight, is a popular dish in Anhui Cuisine known for its bold and spicy flavors. This vegetarian dish is packed with protein and is perfect for those who enjoy a little heat in their meals.
Ingredients
- 1 block of firm tofu, cubed
- 2 tablespoons Sichuan peppercorns
- 3-4 dried red chilies
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- 2 green onions, chopped
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1/4 cup vegetable broth
- 2 tablespoons cooking oil
Instructions
- Press the tofu to remove excess water, then cut it into cubes.
- Heat the cooking oil in a pan over medium heat and add the Sichuan peppercorns and dried red chilies. Cook until fragrant.
- Add the garlic, ginger, and green onions to the pan and sauté for a few minutes.
- Stir in the tofu cubes and cook until lightly browned.
- In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, cornstarch, and vegetable broth. Pour this mixture over the tofu and stir gently to coat.
- Cook for an additional 5-7 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and coat the tofu.
- Serve hot and garnish with additional green onions, if desired.
