Latvian Meatballs in Mushroom Sauce (Latviešu gaļas klosteri sēņu mērcē)
Latviešu gaļas klosteri sēņu mērcē, or Latvian Meatballs in Mushroom Sauce, is a traditional dish from Latvian cuisine that is hearty, flavorful, and perfect for a cozy family dinner.
Ingredients
- 500g ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 300g mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- Fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined, then shape the mixture into meatballs.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their liquid and become golden brown, about 5 minutes.
- Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
- Pour in the beef broth and stir to combine, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Return the meatballs to the skillet, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through.
- Stir in the sour cream and cook for an additional 5 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
- Remove from heat and garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
