Lentil Stew With Rice Cakes Snack (udupi Sambar Idli Chaat)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup lentils
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, diced
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp asafoetida
  • 10-12 curry leaves
  • 2-3 green chilies, slit
  • 1/2 cup tamarind extract
  • Salt to taste
  • 4-6 idlis (rice cakes), cubed
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • Coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Wash the lentils and pressure cook with water, turmeric, and salt until soft.
  2. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, and asafoetida. Saute until the seeds splutter.
  3. Add curry leaves, green chilies, and onions. Saute until the onions turn golden brown.
  4. Add tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
  5. Add tamarind extract, red chili powder, and salt. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  6. Add the cooked lentils to the pan and bring to a boil. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  7. Garnish with coriander leaves.
  8. To make the snack, place the cubed idlis on a plate and pour the lentil stew over them. Serve hot.
