Lentil Stew With Rice Cakes Snack (udupi Sambar Idli Chaat)
This Lentil Stew with Rice Cakes Snack, also known as Udupi Sambar Idli Chaat, is a popular dish from the Karnataka Cuisine. It's a flavorful and satisfying stew served with crispy rice cakes, making it a perfect snack or light meal.
Ingredients
- 1 cup lentils
- 2 cups water
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp asafoetida
- 10-12 curry leaves
- 2-3 green chilies, slit
- 1/2 cup tamarind extract
- Salt to taste
- 4-6 idlis (rice cakes), cubed
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
- 1/2 tsp red chili powder
- Coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Wash the lentils and pressure cook with water, turmeric, and salt until soft.
- Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, and asafoetida. Saute until the seeds splutter.
- Add curry leaves, green chilies, and onions. Saute until the onions turn golden brown.
- Add tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
- Add tamarind extract, red chili powder, and salt. Simmer for 5 minutes.
- Add the cooked lentils to the pan and bring to a boil. Simmer for 10 minutes.
- Garnish with coriander leaves.
- To make the snack, place the cubed idlis on a plate and pour the lentil stew over them. Serve hot.
