Libyan Style Okra and Lamb Stew (Bamia Bil-Djaj)
Bamia Bil-Djaj is a traditional Libyan stew that combines tender lamb, okra, and aromatic spices. This hearty and flavorful dish is perfect for a comforting family meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb lamb, cut into chunks
- 1 lb fresh okra, trimmed
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 cups water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened.
- Add the lamb chunks to the pot and brown on all sides.
- Stir in the minced garlic, ground coriander, ground cumin, ground turmeric, and cayenne pepper. Cook for 2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and water to the pot. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer.
- Add the trimmed okra to the pot and gently stir to combine with the lamb and tomato mixture.
- Cover the pot and let the stew simmer for 45-50 minutes, or until the lamb is tender and the okra is cooked through.
- Adjust the seasoning if needed and serve the Bamia Bil-Djaj hot with rice or crusty bread.
