Liechtensteiner Cheese and Onion Tart (Liechtensteiner Käse-Zwiebel-Tarte)

Ingredients

  • 1 9-inch pie crust
  • 2 cups shredded Swiss cheese
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 eggs

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Place the pie crust in a 9-inch tart pan and trim any excess dough. Prick the bottom of the crust with a fork and bake for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, salt, and black pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown, about 15-20 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded Swiss cheese over the bottom of the partially baked pie crust. Spread the caramelized onions over the cheese.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the heavy cream and eggs. Pour the mixture over the onions in the pie crust.
  6. Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of shredded Swiss cheese over the top.
  7. Bake the tart in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the filling is set and the crust is golden brown.
  8. Allow the tart to cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
