Liège Meatballs (Boulets à la Liégeoise)

Ingredients

  • 500g ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 slices of bread, soaked in milk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp parsley, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 500ml beef broth
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, chopped onion, soaked bread, egg, parsley, salt, and pepper. Form the mixture into meatballs.
  2. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides, then remove them from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Sprinkle the flour into the skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes to make a roux.
  4. Gradually add the beef broth, apple cider vinegar, and brown sugar to the skillet, stirring to combine and create a sauce.
  5. Return the meatballs to the skillet, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce has thickened.
  6. Serve the meatballs with the sauce spooned over the top.
