Liège Meatballs (Boulets à la Liégeoise)
Boulets à la Liégeoise, or Liège Meatballs, are a classic dish from Belgian cuisine. These hearty meatballs are simmered in a rich, sweet and tangy sauce, making them a comforting and flavorful meal.
Ingredients
- 500g ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 slices of bread, soaked in milk
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp parsley, chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp flour
- 500ml beef broth
- 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, chopped onion, soaked bread, egg, parsley, salt, and pepper. Form the mixture into meatballs.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides, then remove them from the skillet and set aside.
- Sprinkle the flour into the skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes to make a roux.
- Gradually add the beef broth, apple cider vinegar, and brown sugar to the skillet, stirring to combine and create a sauce.
- Return the meatballs to the skillet, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce has thickened.
- Serve the meatballs with the sauce spooned over the top.
