Ingredients
- 6 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
- 1 egg, beaten
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, 1/2 cup sugar, cinnamon, salt, and lemon juice. Toss until the apples are evenly coated, then set aside.
- In a separate bowl, mix the flour, 1/2 cup sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the beaten egg until the dough comes together.
- Press two-thirds of the dough into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie dish to form the crust.
- Spoon the apple filling into the crust, then dot the top with the remaining cold butter.
- Roll out the remaining dough and cut it into strips to create a lattice pattern over the apples.
- Bake the vlaai in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Allow the vlaai to cool before serving. Enjoy!
