Limburgse Appelvlaai (limburgian Apple Pie)

Ingredients

  • 6 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, 1/2 cup sugar, cinnamon, salt, and lemon juice. Toss until the apples are evenly coated, then set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, 1/2 cup sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the beaten egg until the dough comes together.
  5. Press two-thirds of the dough into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie dish to form the crust.
  6. Spoon the apple filling into the crust, then dot the top with the remaining cold butter.
  7. Roll out the remaining dough and cut it into strips to create a lattice pattern over the apples.
  8. Bake the vlaai in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  9. Allow the vlaai to cool before serving. Enjoy!
