Ingredients

  • 500g all-purpose flour
  • 250g unsalted butter, softened
  • 75g granulated sugar
  • 7g active dry yeast
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 10-12 ripe plums, pitted and halved
  • 50g granulated sugar (for plums)
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, softened butter, granulated sugar, yeast, and salt. Knead the dough until smooth, then cover and let it rise for 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  3. Roll out the dough on a floured surface and transfer it to a greased 9-inch tart pan. Press the dough into the pan, trimming any excess from the edges.
  4. Arrange the halved plums on top of the dough, sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.
  5. Brush the edges of the dough with the beaten egg wash.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
  7. Allow the vlaai to cool before serving.
