Lithuanian Bacon Buns (Lietuviški spirgai su šonine)
Lietuviški spirgai su šonine, or Lithuanian Bacon Buns, are a traditional Lithuanian dish that combines the savory flavors of bacon with a soft, fluffy dough. These buns are perfect for a hearty breakfast or as a delicious snack.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 lb sliced bacon
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the warm milk, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour.
- While the dough is rising, cook the bacon in a skillet until crispy. Drain on paper towels and chop into small pieces.
- Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Flatten each piece and place a spoonful of cooked bacon in the center. Fold the dough over the bacon and pinch the edges to seal.
- Place the filled buns on a baking sheet, cover, and let them rise for another 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown. Serve warm and enjoy!
