Long John Silvers Hush Puppies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix together the buttermilk, water, egg, and chopped onion.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  4. Heat 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pot to 365°F (185°C).
  5. Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  6. Remove the hush puppies from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  7. Serve hot and enjoy!
