Lucknowi Nihari (Slow-cooked Beef Stew)
Slow-cooked Beef Stew, also known as Lucknowi Nihari, is a traditional dish from the Awadhi Cuisine of India. This rich and flavorful stew is made with tender beef and a blend of aromatic spices, slow-cooked to perfection.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs beef, cut into chunks
- 2 onions, finely sliced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch ginger, grated
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1/4 cup yogurt
- 2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
- 2 bay leaves
- 4 green cardamom pods
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1 tbsp coriander powder
- 1 tbsp red chili powder
- Salt to taste
- 4 cups water
Instructions
- Heat ghee in a large pot over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until golden brown.
- Add the garlic, ginger, and tomatoes. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
- Add the beef chunks, yogurt, and spices. Cook for 5 minutes.
- Pour in the water and bring the stew to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 4 hours until the beef is tender.
- Once the beef is cooked, adjust the seasoning and serve hot.
