Ingredients

  • 1 lb beef sirloin, thinly sliced

  • 1 tablespoon Sichuan peppercorns
  • 2 tablespoons doubanjiang (broad bean paste)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese cooking wine
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over high heat.
  2. Add the beef slices and stir-fry until browned. Remove the beef from the wok and set aside.
  3. In the same wok, add garlic, ginger, green onions, and Sichuan peppercorns. Stir-fry until aromatic.
  4. Add doubanjiang, soy sauce, Chinese cooking wine, and sugar. Stir to combine.
  5. Pour in the beef broth and bring to a simmer.
  6. In a small bowl, mix cornstarch and water to create a slurry. Pour the slurry into the wok, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
  7. Return the cooked beef to the wok and toss to coat with the sauce.
  8. Transfer the Ma La Beef to a serving dish and garnish with additional green onions if desired.
