Ingredients

  • 1 block of firm tofu, cut into cubes
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Sichuan peppercorns
  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu cubes between paper towels to remove excess moisture.
  2. Coat the tofu cubes in cornstarch, shaking off any excess.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes and fry until golden brown and crispy on all sides. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add a bit more oil if needed and sauté the garlic and Sichuan peppercorns until fragrant.
  5. Add the green onions, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, chili flakes, and vegetable broth to the skillet. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer.
  6. Return the fried tofu to the skillet and toss to coat in the spicy garlic sauce.
  7. Transfer the Ma La Dou Fu to a serving dish and garnish with additional green onions, if desired.
