Ma Po Dou Fu (spicy Braised Tofu)
Ma Po Dou Fu, also known as Spicy Braised Tofu, is a classic dish from Anhui Cuisine that features soft tofu cooked in a spicy and flavorful sauce. This dish is known for its numbing and spicy flavors, and it's a favorite among tofu lovers.
Ingredients
- 1 block (14 oz) soft tofu, cut into cubes
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece ginger, minced
- 1/4 lb ground pork (optional)
- 2 tbsp doubanjiang (spicy bean paste)
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
- 1 tsp Sichuan peppercorns
- 2 green onions, chopped
- 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water
Instructions
- Heat the vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the garlic and ginger, and stir-fry for 30 seconds.
- If using, add the ground pork and cook until browned.
- Add the doubanjiang and stir-fry for 1 minute.
- Stir in the soy sauce and chicken broth, then add the tofu and Sichuan peppercorns.
- Simmer for 10 minutes, then add the cornstarch mixture to thicken the sauce.
- Garnish with chopped green onions and serve hot.
