Maamoul cookies are a traditional Syrian Jewish dessert often enjoyed during holidays and special occasions. These delicate cookies are filled with a sweet and nutty mixture, making them a perfect treat to enjoy with a cup of tea or coffee.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon rose water
- 1 cup pitted dates, chopped
- 1/2 cup walnuts, finely chopped
Instructions
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the flour, salt, and rose water to the butter mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
- In a separate bowl, combine the chopped dates and walnuts.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Take a small portion of the dough and flatten it in the palm of your hand.
- Place a spoonful of the date and walnut mixture in the center of the dough.
- Gently enclose the filling with the dough, shaping it into a ball or using a maamoul mold for decorative patterns.
- Place the filled cookies on a baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the bottoms are golden brown.
- Allow the maamoul cookies to cool before serving.
