Macedonian Baklava (Македонска баклава)
Baklava is a traditional Macedonian dessert made with layers of phyllo pastry, nuts, and sweet syrup. It is a rich and indulgent treat that is perfect for special occasions and celebrations.
Ingredients
- 1 package of phyllo pastry sheets
- 2 cups of mixed nuts (such as walnuts, almonds, and pistachios), finely chopped
- 1 cup of unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1 cup of granulated sugar
- 1 cup of water
- 1/2 cup of honey
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, mix the chopped nuts with cinnamon.
- Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
- Place a sheet of phyllo pastry in the dish and brush with melted butter. Repeat with 7 more sheets, brushing each with butter.
- Sprinkle a layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo pastry.
- Place another sheet of phyllo pastry on top of the nuts and brush with butter. Repeat with 4 more sheets, brushing each with butter.
- Add another layer of the nut mixture.
- Continue layering phyllo pastry and nuts, brushing each phyllo sheet with butter, until all the nut mixture is used.
- Finish with a final layer of phyllo pastry, brushing each sheet with butter.
- Cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes using a sharp knife.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the baklava is baking, make the syrup by combining the sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
- When the baklava is done, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over it.
- Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving.
