Macedonian Kifli (Кифли)

Kifli are traditional Macedonian pastries that are enjoyed as a sweet treat or with a cup of coffee. They are made with a flaky dough and filled with a sweet walnut mixture.

Macedonian Kifli (Кифли)

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup ground walnuts
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour and cold butter. Use your hands to mix until crumbly.
  2. Add the sour cream and mix until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into 4 equal parts, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  4. In a separate bowl, mix the sugar, ground walnuts, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon to make the filling.
  5. Roll out one portion of the dough into a circle and cut it into 6 wedges.
  6. Place a small spoonful of the walnut filling at the wide end of each wedge and roll it up towards the pointed end.
  7. Place the kifli on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Let the kifli cool before serving.
