Macedonian Kifli (Кифли)
Kifli are traditional Macedonian pastries that are enjoyed as a sweet treat or with a cup of coffee. They are made with a flaky dough and filled with a sweet walnut mixture.
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 cup ground walnuts
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and cold butter. Use your hands to mix until crumbly.
- Add the sour cream and mix until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into 4 equal parts, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a separate bowl, mix the sugar, ground walnuts, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon to make the filling.
- Roll out one portion of the dough into a circle and cut it into 6 wedges.
- Place a small spoonful of the walnut filling at the wide end of each wedge and roll it up towards the pointed end.
- Place the kifli on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let the kifli cool before serving.
