Македонска слатка погача (Macedonian Sweet Bread) is a traditional Macedonian dessert that is perfect for special occasions or as a sweet treat with your morning coffee.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup raisins
- 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp active dry yeast
- 1/4 tsp salt
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and sugar. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes, then place it in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise for 1 hour.
- Punch down the dough and knead in the raisins and walnuts. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet. Let it rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake the bread for 40-45 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Let the bread cool before slicing and serving.
