Maeuntang Spicy Fish Stew (매운탕)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb firm white fish fillets, such as cod or halibut
  • 8 cups water
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch ginger, sliced
  • 2 green onions, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 1/2 cup Korean radish, sliced
  • 1/2 cup Korean red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
  • 3 tbsp fish sauce
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 block tofu, cut into cubes
  • 1 small zucchini, sliced
  • 1 red chili, sliced (optional for extra heat)

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, bring the water to a boil.
  2. Add the onion, garlic, ginger, and green onions. Simmer for 15 minutes to create the broth.
  3. Add the Korean radish, red pepper flakes, fish sauce, and soy sauce. Simmer for another 10 minutes.
  4. Gently add the fish fillets, tofu, zucchini, and red chili (if using) to the pot. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until the fish is cooked through.
  5. Serve the Maeuntang hot with a bowl of steamed rice.
