Maeuntang Spicy Fish Stew (매운탕)
매운탕 (Maeuntang) is a popular spicy fish stew in Korean cuisine, known for its rich and flavorful broth. This dish is perfect for warming up during cold weather and is often enjoyed with a bowl of rice.
Ingredients
- 1 lb firm white fish fillets, such as cod or halibut
- 8 cups water
- 1 onion, sliced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch ginger, sliced
- 2 green onions, cut into 2-inch pieces
- 1/2 cup Korean radish, sliced
- 1/2 cup Korean red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
- 3 tbsp fish sauce
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 block tofu, cut into cubes
- 1 small zucchini, sliced
- 1 red chili, sliced (optional for extra heat)
Instructions
- In a large pot, bring the water to a boil.
- Add the onion, garlic, ginger, and green onions. Simmer for 15 minutes to create the broth.
- Add the Korean radish, red pepper flakes, fish sauce, and soy sauce. Simmer for another 10 minutes.
- Gently add the fish fillets, tofu, zucchini, and red chili (if using) to the pot. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until the fish is cooked through.
- Serve the Maeuntang hot with a bowl of steamed rice.
