Mahamri is a popular Kenyan delicacy that is enjoyed as a breakfast or snack. These sweet, deep-fried bread rolls are a delightful treat that pairs perfectly with a cup of chai.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/4 cup coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Oil for deep-frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, salt, and cardamom.
  2. Add the coconut milk and water, then knead the dough until smooth.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rest for 2 hours.
  4. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape each into a ball.
  5. Flatten each ball into a disc and then fold it in half to form a semi-circle.
  6. Heat the oil in a deep pan and fry the mahamri until golden brown on both sides.
  7. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve warm and enjoy!
