Mahamri (tanzanian Chapati)
Mahamri is a popular Tanzanian delicacy, often enjoyed as a breakfast or snack. These sweet, deep-fried bread rolls are a staple in Swahili cuisine and are typically served with tea or coffee.
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 cup coconut milk
- 1/4 cup warm water
- Oil for deep-frying
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix the warm water and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a separate bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture and coconut milk. Knead the dough until smooth.
- Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
- Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape each into a ball. Flatten each ball slightly and make a few cuts on the surface.
- Heat the oil in a deep pan and fry the mahamri in batches until golden brown on both sides.
- Remove and drain on paper towels. Serve warm.
