Makivnyk (ukrainian Poppy Seed Cake)
Makivnyk is a traditional Ukrainian poppy seed cake that is often enjoyed during holidays and special occasions. This delicious dessert is made with a sweet dough and a rich poppy seed filling, creating a delightful combination of flavors and textures.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups ground poppy seeds
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Instructions
- In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and butter. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the milk and vanilla.
- Gradually mix in the flour until a soft dough forms. Divide the dough in half, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out one half of the dough to fit the bottom of a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the ground poppy seeds, honey, and chopped walnuts. Spread the poppy seed filling over the dough in the baking dish.
- Roll out the remaining dough and place it over the filling. Press the edges to seal the dough together.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow to cool before cutting into squares and serving.
