Maltese Pasta Pie (timpana Twist)
Maltese Pasta Pie, also known as Timpana, is a traditional dish from the Mediterranean island of Malta. This hearty and flavorful pasta dish is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. In this recipe, we put a twist on the classic Timpana by adding some unique ingredients and flavors.
Ingredients
- 500g short pasta, such as penne or rigatoni
- 500g ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 can (400g) diced tomatoes
- 1/2 cup tomato paste
- 1/2 cup red wine
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 4 eggs, beaten
- 1/2 cup chopped parsley
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 500g puff pastry
Instructions
- In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the pasta until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onion is soft.
- Add the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and red wine to the skillet. Simmer for 10 minutes, then remove from heat.
- In a large bowl, combine the cooked pasta, beef mixture, Parmesan cheese, beaten eggs, and chopped parsley. Season with salt and pepper.
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Line a greased baking dish with puff pastry, leaving some overhang.
- Pour the pasta mixture into the lined baking dish and fold the overhanging pastry over the top to encase the filling.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the filling is set.
- Let the pasta pie cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
