Maltese Pasta Pie, also known as Timpana, is a traditional dish from the Mediterranean island of Malta. This hearty and flavorful pasta dish is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. In this recipe, we put a twist on the classic Timpana by adding some unique ingredients and flavors.

Maltese Pasta Pie (timpana Twist)

Ingredients

  • 500g short pasta, such as penne or rigatoni
  • 500g ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 can (400g) diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 4 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup chopped parsley
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 500g puff pastry

Instructions

  1. In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the pasta until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onion is soft.
  3. Add the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and red wine to the skillet. Simmer for 10 minutes, then remove from heat.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the cooked pasta, beef mixture, Parmesan cheese, beaten eggs, and chopped parsley. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  6. Line a greased baking dish with puff pastry, leaving some overhang.
  7. Pour the pasta mixture into the lined baking dish and fold the overhanging pastry over the top to encase the filling.
  8. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the filling is set.
  9. Let the pasta pie cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
