Malu Sothi (sri Lankan Fish Stew)
Malu Sothi is a traditional Sri Lankan fish stew that is creamy, aromatic, and bursting with flavors. This dish is a staple in Sri Lankan cuisine and is perfect for a comforting meal.
Ingredients
- 500g fish fillets, cut into chunks
- 1 onion, sliced
- 2 green chilies, sliced
- 1-inch ginger, grated
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 can (400ml) coconut milk
- 1 cup water
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the onion, green chilies, ginger, garlic, curry leaves, and cinnamon stick. Sauté until the onions are soft and translucent.
- Add the fish chunks to the pot and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring gently to coat the fish with the aromatics.
- Pour in the coconut milk and water. Add the turmeric powder and season with salt. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.
- Bring the stew to a gentle simmer and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through and the flavors have melded together.
- Once the stew is ready, remove from heat and serve hot with steamed rice or crusty bread.
