Mango Menaskai (sweet And Sour Mango Curry)
Mango Menaskai, also known as Sweet and Sour Mango Curry, is a traditional dish from Mangalurean Cuisine that perfectly balances the sweetness of ripe mangoes with the tanginess of tamarind and the heat of red chilies. This flavorful curry is a delightful combination of sweet, sour, and spicy flavors that will tantalize your taste buds.
Ingredients
- 2 ripe mangoes, peeled and diced
- 1/2 cup grated coconut
- 1 tablespoon jaggery (or brown sugar)
- 1 lemon-sized ball of tamarind, soaked in 1/2 cup warm water
- 4-5 dried red chilies
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 sprig curry leaves
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add fenugreek seeds, dried red chilies, and curry leaves. Sauté for a minute.
- Add the diced mangoes, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Extract the pulp from the soaked tamarind and add it to the pan along with the water. Cook for another 5 minutes.
- Add grated coconut and jaggery to the pan. Mix everything together and cook for 2-3 minutes until the flavors blend well.
- Remove from heat and let the curry cool down before serving.
