Mansaf Shepherd's Pie (بايك بالمنسف)
This recipe combines the flavors of the traditional Jordanian dish Mansaf with the concept of a Shepherd's Pie, creating a delicious fusion dish that is sure to impress your guests.
Ingredients
- 1 kg lamb, cut into chunks
- 2 cups plain yogurt
- 1/2 cup pine nuts
- 1/4 cup ghee
- 1 onion, chopped
- 4 cups water
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- Salt to taste
- 6 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat the ghee over medium heat and sauté the chopped onion until translucent.
- Add the chunks of lamb to the pot and brown on all sides.
- Pour in the water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 1 hour until the meat is tender.
- In a separate pan, toast the pine nuts until golden brown and set aside.
- In a bowl, mix the yogurt with the ground turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom, and black pepper.
- Once the meat is tender, remove it from the pot and set aside. Keep the broth in the pot.
- Cook the cubed potatoes in boiling water until tender. Drain and mash with the milk, butter, salt, and pepper.
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- In a large baking dish, spread the mashed potatoes as the bottom layer.
- Arrange the cooked lamb chunks on top of the potatoes.
- Pour the spiced yogurt mixture over the lamb.
- Sprinkle the toasted pine nuts on top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
