Mansaf Shepherd's Pie (بايك بالمنسف)

This recipe combines the flavors of the traditional Jordanian dish Mansaf with the concept of a Shepherd's Pie, creating a delicious fusion dish that is sure to impress your guests.

Mansaf Shepherd's Pie (بايك بالمنسف)

Ingredients

  • 1 kg lamb, cut into chunks
  • 2 cups plain yogurt
  • 1/2 cup pine nuts
  • 1/4 cup ghee
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 6 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat the ghee over medium heat and sauté the chopped onion until translucent.
  2. Add the chunks of lamb to the pot and brown on all sides.
  3. Pour in the water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 1 hour until the meat is tender.
  4. In a separate pan, toast the pine nuts until golden brown and set aside.
  5. In a bowl, mix the yogurt with the ground turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom, and black pepper.
  6. Once the meat is tender, remove it from the pot and set aside. Keep the broth in the pot.
  7. Cook the cubed potatoes in boiling water until tender. Drain and mash with the milk, butter, salt, and pepper.
  8. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  9. In a large baking dish, spread the mashed potatoes as the bottom layer.
  10. Arrange the cooked lamb chunks on top of the potatoes.
  11. Pour the spiced yogurt mixture over the lamb.
  12. Sprinkle the toasted pine nuts on top.
  13. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
  14. Serve hot and enjoy!
