Manti (uyghur Dumplings)

Manti are traditional Uyghur dumplings from Xinjiang, China, filled with seasoned ground meat and wrapped in a delicate dough. These dumplings are typically served with a yogurt sauce and are a popular dish in Uyghur cuisine.

Manti (uyghur Dumplings)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground lamb or beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 package dumpling wrappers
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix together the ground meat, onion, garlic, cumin, coriander, salt, and pepper.
  2. Place a small amount of the meat mixture in the center of each dumpling wrapper. Fold the wrapper in half and pinch the edges to seal.
  3. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the dumplings and cook for 8-10 minutes, or until they float to the surface.
  4. While the dumplings are cooking, mix together the yogurt, butter, and paprika in a saucepan. Heat gently until warm.
  5. Once the dumplings are cooked, drain them and serve with the warm yogurt sauce. Sprinkle with chopped cilantro before serving.
