Mantu (afghan Dumplings)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef or lamb
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 package dumpling wrappers
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Chopped fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix the ground meat, onion, garlic, coriander, cumin, turmeric, salt, and pepper.
  2. Place a small amount of the meat mixture in the center of each dumpling wrapper. Fold the wrapper over the filling and pinch the edges to seal.
  3. In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the filled dumplings in a single layer and cook until the bottoms are golden brown.
  4. Pour the tomato sauce over the dumplings, cover the pot, and simmer for 30 minutes.
  5. Serve the mantu topped with yogurt and garnished with fresh cilantro.
