Marak Samak (omani Spiced Fish And Cabbage Stew)
Marak Samak is a traditional Omani spiced fish and cabbage stew that is bursting with flavor and warmth. This hearty and comforting dish is perfect for a cozy family meal or a gathering with friends.
Ingredients
- 1 lb white fish fillets, such as cod or grouper
- 1 small cabbage, chopped
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1/2 tsp ground coriander
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 4 cups fish or vegetable broth
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp olive oil
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, and sauté until softened.
- Add the turmeric, cumin, coriander, and cayenne pepper to the pot, and stir for 1 minute to toast the spices.
- Add the chopped cabbage and diced tomatoes to the pot, and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Pour in the fish or vegetable broth, and bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Gently place the fish fillets into the pot, and let them cook for 10-15 minutes, or until they are opaque and flake easily with a fork.
- Season the stew with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve the Marak Samak hot, garnished with fresh cilantro if desired.
