Marak Samak is a traditional Omani dish that features a flavorful combination of spiced fish and creamy coconut stew. This dish is a perfect representation of Omani cuisine, with its rich blend of spices and use of fresh seafood.
Ingredients
- 500g white fish fillets, cut into chunks
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 red chili, finely chopped
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 400ml coconut milk
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- Juice of 1 lime
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat some oil over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, and red chili. Sauté until the onion is soft and translucent.
- Add the ground turmeric, cumin, and coriander. Stir well to coat the onions and spices.
- Pour in the coconut milk and bring to a gentle simmer.
- Add the diced tomatoes and lime juice. Season with salt to taste.
- Gently place the fish chunks into the stew. Cover and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through.
- Once the fish is cooked, garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with steamed rice or flatbread.
