Marak Samak (omani Spiced Fish And Potato Stew)
Marak Samak is a traditional Omani spiced fish and potato stew that is bursting with flavor. This hearty and comforting dish is perfect for a cozy family dinner or a gathering with friends.
Ingredients
- 500g white fish fillets, cut into chunks
- 2 large potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 4 cups fish or vegetable broth
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Chopped fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat some oil over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic, and cook until softened.
- Add the turmeric, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper. Stir well to coat the onions and garlic with the spices.
- Add the diced potatoes and chopped tomatoes. Pour in the fish or vegetable broth and bring to a simmer.
- Gently add the fish chunks to the pot. Season with salt and pepper, then cover and let it simmer for about 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the fish is cooked through.
- Once done, taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. Serve the Marak Samak hot, garnished with chopped fresh cilantro.
