Ingredients
- 4 herring fillets

- 10 whole black peppercorns
- 4 bay leaves
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, combine the white vinegar, sugar, water, black peppercorns, and bay leaves. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and let the marinade cool to room temperature.
- Place the herring fillets and sliced red onion in a glass or plastic container. Pour the cooled marinade over the herring, making sure they are completely covered. Cover the container and refrigerate for at least 24 hours before serving.
- Serve the marinerede sild chilled, either as an appetizer or as part of a traditional Danish smørrebrød (open-faced sandwich).
