Mas Biryani (maldivian Fish Biryani)

Ingredients

  • 500g fish fillets, cut into cubes
  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tbsp biryani masala
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/4 cup chopped coriander leaves
  • 1/4 cup chopped mint leaves
  • 4 cups water
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 tbsp ghee or clarified butter

Instructions

  1. Wash the rice and soak it in water for 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  2. Marinate the fish with yogurt, biryani masala, turmeric powder, and red chili powder. Let it marinate for 15 minutes.
  3. In a large pot, heat ghee and sauté the sliced onions until golden brown.
  4. Add the marinated fish and cook for 5 minutes.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes, coriander leaves, and mint leaves. Cook for another 5 minutes.
  6. Layer the soaked rice over the fish mixture. Add 4 cups of water and salt. Cover and cook until the rice is done.
  7. Once the rice is cooked, gently fluff it with a fork and serve hot.
