Mas Rihaakuru Dhals (spicy Lentil Soup)
Mas Rihaakuru Dhals, also known as Spicy Lentil Soup, is a traditional dish from Maldivian cuisine that is packed with flavor and warmth. This hearty soup is perfect for a cozy night in or to serve to guests for a comforting meal.
Ingredients
- 1 cup red lentils
- 4 cups water
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 green chili, sliced
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp Rihaakuru (Maldivian fish paste)
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Rinse the red lentils in cold water until the water runs clear.
- In a large pot, combine the lentils and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
- Add the onion, garlic, ginger, tomatoes, green chili, turmeric, cumin, coriander, and salt to the pot. Cook for another 10 minutes.
- Stir in the Rihaakuru and coconut oil, and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
- Adjust seasoning if needed and serve hot, garnished with fresh cilantro.
