Masala Khichdi Magic
Masala Khichdi is a traditional Gujarati dish that is not only delicious but also nutritious. It is a one-pot meal made with rice, lentils, and a variety of spices. This Masala Khichdi recipe is a perfect blend of flavors and is sure to become a family favorite!
Ingredients
- 1 cup basmati rice
- 1/2 cup split yellow lentils (moong dal)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 1 green chili, slit
- 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 2 cloves
- 2 green cardamom pods
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter) or oil
- Salt to taste
- 4 cups water
Instructions
- Wash the rice and lentils together, then soak for 15 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- Heat ghee or oil in a pressure cooker or large pot. Add cumin seeds, cloves, cardamom, and cinnamon. Sauté until fragrant.
- Add the chopped onions, green chili, and ginger-garlic paste. Sauté until the onions are golden brown.
- Add the chopped tomato, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and oil starts to separate.
- Add the soaked rice and lentils. Sauté for 2 minutes.
- Pour in the water and mix well. Close the pressure cooker or pot with a lid and cook for 3 whistles or about 15 minutes on low heat.
- Once the pressure releases, open the cooker or pot and gently fluff the khichdi with a fork.
- Serve hot with a dollop of ghee and your favorite side dish.
