Mauritian Fish Vindaye
Mauritian Fish Vindaye is a traditional dish from the island of Mauritius, known for its bold and tangy flavors. This dish is a perfect blend of Indian and Creole influences, creating a unique and delicious meal.
Ingredients
- 500g firm white fish fillets, cut into chunks
- 2 onions, thinly sliced
- 4-5 green chilies, slit lengthwise
- 1-inch ginger, grated
- 4-5 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix the fish chunks with turmeric powder and a pinch of salt. Set aside for 10 minutes.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a pan and fry the fish chunks until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
- In the same pan, add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Then add the sliced onions, green chilies, ginger, and garlic. Saute until the onions are soft.
- Add the fried fish chunks to the pan and pour in the white vinegar. Simmer for 5-7 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let the vindaye cool to room temperature before serving.
