Mauritian Fish Vindaye

Ingredients

  • 500g firm white fish fillets, cut into chunks
  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 4-5 green chilies, slit lengthwise
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 4-5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix the fish chunks with turmeric powder and a pinch of salt. Set aside for 10 minutes.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a pan and fry the fish chunks until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Then add the sliced onions, green chilies, ginger, and garlic. Saute until the onions are soft.
  4. Add the fried fish chunks to the pan and pour in the white vinegar. Simmer for 5-7 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and let the vindaye cool to room temperature before serving.
