Meat Pie (empadão De Carne)
Meat Pie, also known as Empadão de Carne, is a traditional Portuguese dish that consists of a savory meat filling encased in a buttery pastry crust. This hearty and comforting dish is perfect for a family meal or special occasions.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1 cup carrots, diced
- 1 cup corn kernels
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup chicken or beef broth
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1/2 cup milk
- 4 tbsp butter
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, and cook until the onion is translucent.
- Stir in the peas, carrots, corn, tomato sauce, and broth. Season with salt and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes, then remove from heat and set aside.
- Boil the potatoes in a large pot of salted water until tender. Drain and mash with the milk and butter until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Spread half of the mashed potatoes in the bottom of a greased baking dish. Spoon the meat mixture on top, then cover with the remaining mashed potatoes.
- Brush the top with the beaten egg to create a golden crust.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
