Meen Biriyani, also known as Fish Biriyani, is a popular dish in Mangalurean Catholic Cuisine. This flavorful and aromatic biriyani is made with marinated fish pieces and fragrant spices, creating a delicious and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

  • 500g fish, cut into pieces
  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 tomatoes, chopped
  • 4 green chilies, slit
  • 1/2 cup mint leaves
  • 1/2 cup coriander leaves
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp biriyani masala
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 4 cups water
  • Salt to taste
  • 3 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
  • 3 tbsp oil

Instructions

  1. Marinate the fish pieces with yogurt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Let it sit for 30 minutes.
  2. Wash and soak the basmati rice for 30 minutes.
  3. In a large pot, heat ghee and oil. Add the sliced onions and sauté until golden brown.
  4. Add the marinated fish, tomatoes, green chilies, ginger-garlic paste, mint leaves, and coriander leaves. Cook for 5 minutes.
  5. Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pot. Sprinkle biriyani masala and garam masala. Mix well.
  6. Pour water and season with salt. Cover and cook until the rice and fish are fully cooked.
  7. Once done, fluff the biriyani with a fork and serve hot.
