Meen Biriyani (fish Biriyani)
Meen Biriyani, also known as Fish Biriyani, is a popular dish in Mangalurean Catholic Cuisine. This flavorful and aromatic biriyani is made with marinated fish pieces and fragrant spices, creating a delicious and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 500g fish, cut into pieces
- 2 cups basmati rice
- 1 cup yogurt
- 2 onions, thinly sliced
- 4 tomatoes, chopped
- 4 green chilies, slit
- 1/2 cup mint leaves
- 1/2 cup coriander leaves
- 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp biriyani masala
- 1/2 tsp garam masala
- 4 cups water
- Salt to taste
- 3 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
- 3 tbsp oil
Instructions
- Marinate the fish pieces with yogurt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Let it sit for 30 minutes.
- Wash and soak the basmati rice for 30 minutes.
- In a large pot, heat ghee and oil. Add the sliced onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add the marinated fish, tomatoes, green chilies, ginger-garlic paste, mint leaves, and coriander leaves. Cook for 5 minutes.
- Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pot. Sprinkle biriyani masala and garam masala. Mix well.
- Pour water and season with salt. Cover and cook until the rice and fish are fully cooked.
- Once done, fluff the biriyani with a fork and serve hot.
