Meen Biryani (fragrant Fish Biryani)
Meen Biryani, also known as Fragrant Fish Biryani, is a traditional dish from the Mangalurean Cuisine. This aromatic and flavorful biryani is made with marinated fish and fragrant basmati rice, cooked with a blend of spices and herbs.
Ingredients
- 500g fish, cut into pieces
- 2 cups basmati rice
- 1 cup yogurt
- 2 onions, thinly sliced
- 4 tomatoes, chopped
- 4 green chilies, slit
- 1/4 cup mint leaves
- 1/4 cup coriander leaves
- 1/4 cup ghee
- 1/4 cup oil
- 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp biryani masala
- Whole spices: bay leaf, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Marinate the fish with yogurt, turmeric, red chili powder, and salt. Let it sit for 30 minutes.
- Wash and soak the basmati rice for 30 minutes.
- Heat ghee and oil in a large pot. Add the whole spices and sauté the onions until golden brown.
- Add the ginger-garlic paste, green chilies, tomatoes, mint, and coriander leaves. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
- Layer the marinated fish over the masala, followed by the soaked rice.
- Sprinkle biryani masala and salt. Pour 4 cups of water over the rice.
- Cover and cook on low heat until the rice and fish are fully cooked.
- Gently fluff the biryani with a fork and serve hot.
