Meen Biryani (fragrant Fish Biryani)

Meen Biryani, also known as Fragrant Fish Biryani, is a traditional dish from the Mangalurean Cuisine. This aromatic and flavorful biryani is made with marinated fish and fragrant basmati rice, cooked with a blend of spices and herbs.

Meen Biryani (fragrant Fish Biryani)

Ingredients

  • 500g fish, cut into pieces
  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 tomatoes, chopped
  • 4 green chilies, slit
  • 1/4 cup mint leaves
  • 1/4 cup coriander leaves
  • 1/4 cup ghee
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp biryani masala
  • Whole spices: bay leaf, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Marinate the fish with yogurt, turmeric, red chili powder, and salt. Let it sit for 30 minutes.
  2. Wash and soak the basmati rice for 30 minutes.
  3. Heat ghee and oil in a large pot. Add the whole spices and sauté the onions until golden brown.
  4. Add the ginger-garlic paste, green chilies, tomatoes, mint, and coriander leaves. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
  5. Layer the marinated fish over the masala, followed by the soaked rice.
  6. Sprinkle biryani masala and salt. Pour 4 cups of water over the rice.
  7. Cover and cook on low heat until the rice and fish are fully cooked.
  8. Gently fluff the biryani with a fork and serve hot.
