Meen Molee (fish Molee)

Meen Molee, also known as Fish Molee, is a traditional dish from the Mangalurean Catholic Cuisine. This creamy and mildly spiced fish curry is a popular delicacy in the coastal region of Mangalore.

Ingredients

  • 500g fish (preferably kingfish or pomfret), cut into pieces
  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 inch ginger, julienned
  • 4-5 green chilies, slit
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1 cup thick coconut milk
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp black pepper powder
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat coconut oil in a pan and sauté the onions, ginger, green chilies, and curry leaves until the onions turn golden brown.
  2. Add turmeric powder and black pepper powder, and sauté for a minute.
  3. Pour in the thick coconut milk and bring it to a gentle simmer.
  4. Add the fish pieces and cook on low heat until the fish is cooked through, about 10-15 minutes.
  5. Season with salt and gently mix without breaking the fish pieces.
  6. Remove from heat and serve hot with steamed rice.
