Mixed Lentil Stew (dalma)
Mixed Lentil Stew, also known as Dalma, is a traditional dish from Odia Cuisine that is both nutritious and delicious. This hearty stew is made with a variety of lentils and vegetables, making it a wholesome and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup split pigeon peas (toor dal)
- 1/2 cup split red lentils (masoor dal)
- 1/2 cup split mung beans (moong dal)
- 2 cups mixed vegetables (carrots, potatoes, pumpkin, etc.), diced
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 inch ginger, grated
- 3-4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 2-3 green chilies, slit
- 2 tbsp ghee or oil
- Salt to taste
- 4 cups water
Instructions
- Wash the lentils and soak them in water for 30 minutes.
- Heat ghee or oil in a pressure cooker or pot. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add chopped onions, grated ginger, and minced garlic. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and green chilies. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
- Add the mixed vegetables, soaked lentils, turmeric powder, and salt. Stir well.
- Pour in the water and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or simmer in a pot until the lentils and vegetables are cooked through.
- Once done, adjust the consistency and seasoning as per your preference.
- Serve the mixed lentil stew hot with steamed rice or roti.
