Modak (मोदक)

मोदक (Modak) is a traditional sweet dumpling from Maharashtrian cuisine, often prepared during the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. It is made with a sweet filling of coconut and jaggery, wrapped in a rice flour dough and steamed to perfection.

Modak (मोदक)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups rice flour
  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • 1 cup jaggery, grated
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom powder
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp ghee

Instructions

  1. In a pan, heat ghee and roast the rice flour until it turns slightly golden. Remove from heat and keep aside.
  2. In another pan, combine the grated coconut and jaggery. Cook on low heat until the mixture thickens. Add cardamom powder and mix well. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  3. In a bowl, mix the roasted rice flour, warm water, and salt to form a smooth dough.
  4. Take a small portion of the dough, flatten it into a small disc, and place a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery filling in the center.
  5. Bring the edges of the dough together to form a bundle, pinching them at the top to seal the modak.
  6. Repeat the process for the remaining dough and filling to make all the modaks.
  7. Steam the modaks in a steamer for about 10-12 minutes.
  8. Once done, remove the modaks from the steamer and serve.
