Mongolian Beef Lettuce Wraps (Buryat: Шөл)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 head butter lettuce, leaves separated

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the sliced flank steak and cook until browned, then transfer to a plate.
  3. Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in the same skillet.
  4. Add the onion, garlic, and red bell pepper, and cook until softened.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, ginger, and red pepper flakes.
  6. Return the cooked steak to the skillet and pour the sauce over the beef and vegetables. Cook for a few more minutes until heated through.
  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Spoon the beef mixture into the lettuce leaves and serve.
