Buryat cuisine is known for its hearty and flavorful dishes, often featuring ingredients unique to the region. One such dish is the traditional Buryat stir-fry, known as Гоёмс (Goyoms), which highlights the rich and tender meat of the Mongolian yak.

Mongolian Yak Stir-Fry (Buryat: Гоёмс)

Ingredients

  • 500g Mongolian yak meat, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 bell peppers, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat.
  2. Add the sliced yak meat and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Heat the remaining tablespoon of oil in the same skillet. Add the sliced onion, bell peppers, and minced garlic. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until the vegetables are tender-crisp.
  4. Return the cooked yak meat to the skillet. Add soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, salt, and pepper. Stir-fry for another 2-3 minutes until everything is well combined and heated through.
  5. Remove from heat and transfer to a serving dish. Serve the Buryat Гоёмс hot with steamed rice or noodles.
