Mozambican Fish Cakes (Bolinhos de Peixe Moçambicanos)

Ingredients

  • 500g fresh fish fillets, such as tilapia or snapper
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Boil the fish fillets in a pot of water for 5-7 minutes until cooked through. Drain and let cool.
  2. Flake the cooked fish into a large bowl and add the chopped onion, minced garlic, cilantro, paprika, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
  3. Shape the fish mixture into small patties and coat each patty in flour, then dip in beaten eggs.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the fish cakes for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
  5. Remove the fish cakes from the skillet and place them on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
  6. Serve the Bolinhos de Peixe Moçambicanos hot with a side of spicy dipping sauce or a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.
