Mrouzia (tunisian Chicken And Olive Tagine)
Mrouzia is a traditional Tunisian dish that features succulent chicken, rich spices, and briny olives. This flavorful tagine is perfect for a special occasion or a cozy family dinner.
Ingredients
- 4 chicken thighs
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup green olives
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Season the chicken thighs with salt and pepper.
- In a large tagine or deep skillet, heat some olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the chicken thighs and brown on both sides, then remove from the tagine and set aside.
- In the same tagine, sauté the onion and garlic until softened.
- Add the ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, cumin, cloves, and nutmeg. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Return the chicken thighs to the tagine and add the honey and water. Stir to combine.
- Cover and simmer for 45-50 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and tender.
- Stir in the green olives and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
- Sprinkle with chopped cilantro before serving.
