Mujaddara is a traditional Bahraini dish made with spiced lentils and rice, creating a flavorful and comforting pilaf. This dish is perfect for a hearty and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 1 cup brown lentils
- 1 cup basmati rice
- 2 onions, thinly sliced
- 4 cups vegetable broth
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Rinse the lentils and rice under cold water, then drain.
- In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes.
- Stir in the cumin, cinnamon, and turmeric, and cook for another 2 minutes.
- Add the lentils, rice, and vegetable broth to the pot. Season with salt and pepper, then bring to a boil.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 25-30 minutes, or until the rice and lentils are tender and the liquid is absorbed.
- Fluff the mujaddara with a fork and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes before serving.
