Multani Daal Chawal (ملتانی دال چاول)
ملتانی دال چاول (Multani Daal Chawal) is a traditional Muhajir Cuisine dish that combines flavorful lentils with aromatic rice, creating a wholesome and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 1 cup mixed lentils
- 2 cups basmati rice
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- 1 green chili, chopped
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 4 cups water
- Salt to taste
- 3 tablespoons cooking oil
Instructions
- Wash the lentils and rice separately, then soak them in water for 30 minutes.
- In a large pot, heat the cooking oil and add the cumin seeds. Sauté until they crackle.
- Add the chopped onion, garlic, ginger, and green chili. Sauté until the onions are golden brown.
- Add the diced tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and garam masala. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
- Drain the soaked lentils and add them to the pot. Stir well to combine with the masala.
- Add 4 cups of water and salt to taste. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 30 minutes, or until the lentils are tender.
- In a separate pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Add the soaked rice and cook until it is 80% done. Drain the rice and set aside.
- Layer the partially cooked rice over the cooked lentils in the pot. Cover and cook on low heat for 10-15 minutes, allowing the rice to steam and finish cooking.
- Once the rice is fully cooked, gently fluff it with a fork and serve the Multani Daal Chawal hot.
