Murg Pulao (fragrant Chicken Pulao)
Murg Pulao, also known as Fragrant Chicken Pulao, is a traditional dish from Pashtun Cuisine that is packed with aromatic flavors and tender chicken. This one-pot meal is perfect for family gatherings or special occasions.
Ingredients
- 2 cups basmati rice
- 1 lb chicken, cut into pieces
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch ginger, grated
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt
- 1/4 cup cooking oil
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 4 green cardamom pods
- 4 cloves
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- Salt to taste
- 4 cups water
Instructions
- Wash the basmati rice and soak it in water for 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- In a large pot, heat the cooking oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until golden brown.
- Add the chicken pieces, garlic, and ginger. Cook until the chicken is no longer pink.
- Stir in the chopped tomatoes, yogurt, and spices. Cook for 5 minutes.
- Add the drained rice to the pot and stir gently to combine with the chicken and spices.
- Pour in the water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the rice is cooked and the liquid is absorbed.
- Fluff the pulao with a fork and serve hot.
