Murgh Makhani (butter Chicken)
Murgh Makhani, also known as Butter Chicken, is a classic North Indian dish known for its rich and creamy tomato-based sauce. This recipe is a perfect combination of tender chicken cooked in a flavorful sauce, making it a popular choice for both family dinners and special occasions.
Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs (700g) boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp garam masala
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- 1 1/2 cups tomato puree
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tbsp honey
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cilantro, for garnish
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine the yogurt, lemon juice, ginger-garlic paste, turmeric, cumin, garam masala, coriander, and cayenne pepper. Add the chicken pieces and marinate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best results.
- In a large pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened and lightly browned.
- Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the pan, and cook for another 2 minutes.
- Stir in the marinated chicken and cook until the chicken is no longer pink on the outside.
- Pour in the tomato puree and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Stir in the heavy cream and honey, and season with salt to taste. Simmer for an additional 10 minutes.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with naan or steamed rice.
